あれから10 年、その間にも何度も東北の太平洋沿岸に足を運ぶ度に息子の静をアシスタントとして連れて行った。 海 岸 沿 い に は 裾 野 の 広 い 防 潮 堤 が ど ん ど ん 築 か れ 、 遠 く か ら は 海 が 望 め ず 以 前 の 面 影 は な くな っ て い くけ れ ど 、 防 潮 堤 を 越 え れ ば 以 前 と 変 わ ら な い 広 い 海 が 広 が っ て い る 。 。 驚 くこ と に 一 本 松 は 本 当 の 意 味 で 静 物 と な っ た が 、 希望の象徴であることにかわりはない。小学3年生だった静は 19 歳になった。静と一緒に一本松の前で写っている 父親はもういない。 その写真を褒めてくれた母親も。 世界中の人が外に出る際にマスクをするようになるとは。 そう考えると 10 年という時間は長く感じるが、僕にとっては、あの日が昨日のことのように思えてならない。 だけど、 じっとしてはいられない。ただ先へ進め。

Ten years have passed. During that time, I have visited the Pacific Coast of Tohoku many times, bringing along my son Shizuka as my assistant. On the coastline, they continue to build broad based seawalls, and you can no longer see the ocean from far away, as you could in the past. But when you get past the seawalls, things have not changed, and the wide open ocean stretches out before you. Surprisingly, the lone pine tree truly did become a still life work, and it continues to remain a symbol of hope. Shizuka, who was in the third grade of elementary school at the time of the disaster, is now 19. My father, who appears in the photo with Shizuka in front of the lone pine tree, is now gone. So is my mother, who praised that photograph. And people around the world now wear masks when going outside. Thinking about it that way, 10 years seems like a long time. But for me, I can only think of the events of that day as if it were yesterday. But one can't stand still. We have to just move forward.
